Saving fuel by checking or replacing your air filter

When your vehicle has a dirty air filter, it restricts the flow of air into the car engine, which in turn harms fuel economy and performance. If you want to increase your gas mileage and save fuel at the same time, do the check or change: remove the air filter of your vehicle and hold it up to the sun. If you cannot see the light coming through, it means you need to replace it.

If you are using a disposable paper air filter, better change it for a performance air filter which is typically cleaned rather than changed. When you use a disposable paper air filter, it is more restrictive to airflow, which essentially chokes the engine of your vehicle. A performance air filter, on the other hand, uses either cotton or foam filtration material. Using a performance air filter makes it easier for the air to flow through, which then puts a lot of oxygen into your engine for burning fuel. With this extra air, the computer of your engine responds by using less fuel per air part.

As such, it results in a more efficient fuel mixture that gets more power from every drop of gas injected in your vehicle’s engine. More power from each drop means better gas mileage. The actual miles per gallon varies depending on the vehicle, but a 1-2mpg boost is usual.

The abundant airflow from your air filter puts more horsepower at the pedal for more ease in driving, plus the cleaner air volumes entering your engine contributes to your vehicle’s overall condition. However, keep in mind that overusing the power boost provided by the performance air filter of your vehicle will negate improvements on your mileage.

Performance air filters for your vehicle are infinitely reusable, with many guaranteed for more than 1,000,000 miles. It only requires occasional cleaning as its maintenance.
